2008 HBCU: Technical Topic 2 - Computational Energy Sciences - Subtopic 2A: Multiphase Flow Research
Gas-solids flow is prevalent in fossil fuel processes, appearing in processes such as coal gasifiers. The volume fraction of solids can vary from low to high within a short length scale. The flows invariably span multiple time and length scales and pose enormous computational and experimental challenges. For example, the granular flow in a fluidized bed may range from incompressible to hypersonic, whereas the granular media may undergo a phase change similar to a gas-to-solid transition, all within the same reactor. The volume fraction, stress, and energy typically fluctuate spatially and temporally with amplitudes comparable to the mean. The interaction of the phases with boundaries is often complex and poorly understood. Because multiphase flows may not exhibit a clear separation among the spatial and temporal micro-, meso-, and macroscales, advanced multiscale theories may be needed to analyze them. Therefore, it is critical to understand and be able to model gas-solids systems for building highly efficient, near-zero emission fossil energy plants. The National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) is already funding research in areas of developing models for polydispersed systems, frictional flow regimes, and modeling of gasifiers and carbon-capture devices. Applications are sought for conducting research in complementary areas of gas-solids flow. Research work may be proposed in areas such as the development of theory and advanced computational models, gathering of experimental data from physical systems or molecular dynamics simulations, and the validation of the models. It is desired that the model development be based on the open-source gas-solids flow code MFIX developed by NETL. Advanced diagnostics are needed for probing the fluid dynamics of solids and gas solids flow systems. Detailed information on solids and gas-solids flow structure is needed for validation of computational fluid dynamic (CFD) models. Diagnostics of interest include, but are not limited to, imaging of solids concentration, wall shear, local gas and solids velocities and concentrations (with up to 20% solids), and granular temperature. NETL has a large-scale, cold-flow, fluidization facility for development of novel measurement techniques and for generation of data for validating multiphase flow codes. This facility is highly instrumented for detailed data acquisition. It is desired that the advanced diagnostics development take advantage of this facility.

Low Dose Radiation Research Program - Basic Biology
The Office of Biological and Environmental Research (BER) of the Office of Science, U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the Human Research Program (HRP), National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), hereby announce their interest in receiving grant applications for new research to develop a better scientific basis for understanding risks to humans from exposures to low doses or low fluences of ionizing radiation. Research applications must primarily support the needs of the DOE/BER Low Dose Radiation Research Program; applications may also include complementary research of direct interest to the NASA/HRP Space Radiation Project of sufficient scientific merit to qualify for partial NASA support. Research must focus on elucidating molecular mechanisms and pathways involved in normal radiobiological responses to low-dose exposure and must have the potential to ultimately increase understanding of health outcomes from radiation exposures that are at or near current workplace exposure limits. New research that focuses on molecular and cellular responses within tissue and higher levels of biological organization will receive higher priority. Experimental research of particular interest to this call includes radio-adaptive responses; systems genetics of interindividual variation; low dose and/or low-dose rate effects on: a) proteomic responses, b) the immune system, b) epigenetic regulation, and c) molecular and cellular hallmarks of aging. The programs are also interested in funding new mathematical/risk-modeling projects that will incorporate the latest low dose and low dose rate biological research into mechanism-based models of tissue function. Scientists working in rapidly developing areas of biological sciences not necessarily associated with the study of radiation are also encouraged to consider the contributions that their field can make. Please review the Supplementary Information sections of the funding opportunity announcement for further discussion of DOE and National Nuclear Security Administration programmatic needs.

Enhancing Tumoricidal Activity of Natural Killer (NK) Cells by Dietary Components for Cancer Prevention (R21)
This funding opportunity announcement (FOA), issued by the National Cancer Institute, is designed to stimulate research efforts aimed at establishing the physiological significance of dietary components in modulating the tumoricidal cell activity of natural killer (NK) cells for cancer prevention. The focus of research projects proposed in response to this FOA should be on defining the minimum quantity and duration of exposure to specific dietary components to modulate tumoricidal cell activity of NK cells for cancer prevention and the underlying mechanism(s) accounting for this response. Proposed projects must include animal and/or human investigations to be considered responsive to this announcement. Highly purified populations of immune cells, specific tumor cells such as RMA-S that lack class I MHC expression, target cell-free system, or single-cell assays may be used to define the molecular basis for the diet-induced changes in tumoricidal activity. However, the in vitro studies are only to be used to support in vivo studies and should not constitute the primary focus of the application. Molecular targets for food components may be examined at the sites of the tumoricidal cell receptors and cancer cell specific ligands, the output of tumoricidal cytokines (e.g., IFN-g), and the release of lytic granules such as a granulysin, perforin, and serine proteases (granzymes).

In Utero Exposure to Bioactive Food Components and Mammary Cancer Risk (R21)
This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) issued by the National Cancer Institute, the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, and the Office of Dietary Supplements, encourages innovative preclinical research applications that will enhance the understanding of the relationship between exposure(s) to bioactive food components and/or environmental chemicals in utero, hormonal and growth-factor response, gene expression or epigenetic changes, and subsequent mammary cancer risk in preclinical models. Although much evidence suggests that dietary components are linked to cancer prevention, the specific nutrients, sites of action, and role of exposure in utero remain elusive. Similarly, there are data suggesting a role for environmental agents such as mycotoxins, heterocyclic amines, and environmental chemicals with endocrine activity in the etiology of mammary cancer but the doses, windows of susceptibility, and mechanisms are unclear. This FOA encourages applications that apply new high-throughput genomic, epigenomic, proteomic, and metabolomic technologies to determine how dietary exposures in utero influence adult breast cancer susceptibility. The resulting information will help define effective maternal dietary intervention strategies for breast cancer prevention in her offspring.

The Office of Polar Programs (OPP) at the National Science Foundation (NSF) requests proposals from interested groups to support current and future ice-core drilling activities. Current NSF ice-coring programs include development of drill systems that can obtain ice cores, embed instruments in the ice, carry out geophysical borehole logging, and provide access to the ice-sheet bed. Specifically, proposals are requested for the establishment of a Scientific Drilling Support Office, which will provide scientific leadership and oversight of ice coring and drilling activities funded by NSF, and for an Ice Drilling Design and Operations Group, which will provide the engineering design support for new drilling systems as well as the operation and maintenance of existing systems. Interested parties can propose to manage the Scientific Drilling Support Office, to manage the Ice Drilling Design and Operations Group (which includes operation of the Deep Ice Sheet Coring Drill) or both. The Scientific Drilling Support Office will play a proactive role in the community to encourage innovation in ice-core-drilling technologies in response to community needs and will help guide the Ice Drilling Design and Operations Group to develop new drilling technologies as requested by the research community and funded by NSF. These entities will be expected to work closely together and to partner, as appropriate, with research groups in the submission of research proposals. Through a close collaboration, the successful proponent(s) will be expected to successfully manage and carry out drilling activities in varying mixtures of ice, rock, and sediment. Requirements for drilling activities will be derived from research proposals funded by NSF, as well as collaborations with international partners. The ice-drilling support awardee(s) from this solicitation will be integral to the planning and execution of all aspects of the drilling activities that OPP supports.

Science, Technology, and Society
Science, Technology, and Society (STS) considers proposals that examine historical, philosophical, and sociological questions that arise in connection with science, engineering, and technology, and their respective interactions with society. STS has four components: Ethics and Values in Science, Engineering, and Technology; History and Philosophy of Science, Engineering, and Technology; Social Studies of Science, Engineering, and Technology; and Studies of Policy, Science, Engineering, and Technology. The components overlap but are distinguished by the different scientific and scholarly orientations they take to the subject matter, as well as by different focuses within the subject area. STS encourages the submission of hybrid proposals that strive to integrate research involving two or more of these core areas. STS provides the following modes of support: scholars awards, standard research grants and grants for collaborative research, postdoctoral fellowships, professional development fellowships, doctoral dissertation research improvement grants, small grants for training and research, conference and workshop awards, and other funding opportunities.
